Fur, Fortune, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America
September 22, 2010 6:00PM – 7:30PM recurs

From the best-selling author of Leviathan comes this sweeping narrative of one of America’s most historically rich industries. Beginning his epic history in the early 1600s, Eric Jay Dolin traces the dramatic rise and fall of the American fur industry, from the first Dutch encounters with the Indians to the rise of the conservation movement in the late nineteenth century. Dolin shows how the fur trade, driven by the demands of fashion, sparked controversy, fostered economic competition, and fueled wars among the European powers, as North America became a battleground for colonization and imperial aspirations. The trade in beaver, buffalo, sea otter, and other animal skins spurred the exploration and the settlement of the vast American continent, while it alternately enriched and gravely damaged the lives of America’s native peoples. Populated by a larger-than-life cast—including Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant; President Thomas Jefferson; America’s first multimillionaire, John Jacob Astor; and mountain man Kit Carson—Fur, Fortune, and Empire is the most comprehensive and compelling history of the American fur trade ever written. Dolin’s talk, accompanied by slides, will tell the story of fur trade in America, from East to West.

About the Speaker: Eric Jay Dolin is the author of Leviathan: The History of Whaling In America, which was chosen as one of the best nonfiction books of 2007 by The Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe. A graduate of Brown, Yale, and MIT, where he received his Ph.D. in environmental policy, he lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts, with his wife and two children (www.ericjaydolin.com).

About pianist Leonardo Ciampa

Born in 1971, composer/organist/pianist Leonardo Ciampa is acknowledged as one of the most gifted and versatile musicians of his generation.

As an ogan recitalist, Ciampa has made seven European tours encompassing Italy, Austria, and Germany. He is particularly admired in Italy, where he has played in numerous international festivals (Festival Perosiano, Festival Biellese, Organi Storici della Valsesia, etc.). Currently, Ciampa directs the Chapel organ recital series at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is Music Director of Christ Lutheran Church in Natick, MA. Prior to this appointment, Ciampa was for 23 years Director of Music in various churches in Massachusetts: St. Mary & St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Charlestown (2008-2009); St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brookline (2001-2007); and the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain (1989-2001). At the latter he played the renowned 1859 E. & G. G. Hook organ (destroyed by fire in 2005), on which Ciampa recorded two CDs for AFKA records, No Room at the Inn and No Room at the Inn, Volume II. A third CD, Stained Glass, also on AFKA, will be released in 2011.

Ciampa’s compositions (which are considered “Neoromantic”) include The Annunciation Op. 203 (cantata for chorus, soloists, and strings); Suite Siciliana Op. 145 (for two violins, piano and orchestra), commissioned by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston to open their 25th anniversary season; five Organ Symphonies, a concerto for piano and organ; a piano quintet; and numerous sacred works. His works are published exclusively by CIC (compositorum.com).

As a piano recitalist, Ciampa is known for his warm sound and colorful style reminiscent of the Golden Age of Pianists. He is especially noted for his interpretations of Chopin (whose 200th birthday Ciampa will commemorate with several piano recitals in 2010). Ciampa collaborates regularly with the Lavazza Chamber Ensemble (lavazzachamberensemble.org).

An avid writer, Ciampa’s books include The Twilight of Belcanto and Don Lorenzo Perosi. He also writes the blog, “Faultbook” (faultbook.blogspot.com).

Boston, Mass. (June 29, 2010)—The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group unveils its new Summer Grill Menu, a collection of world-class seafood, sandwiches, salads, and grill favorites sized perfectly for warm weather appetites. Available June 15 through Sept. 6, the fresh, seasonal selections are paired with moderately priced premium wines specially chosen to complement summer flavors.

“The Summer Grill Menu was created for the balmy nights and lighter appetites of summer. From the Lobster Salad to the Open-Faced Sliced Filet, the menu takes the best ingredients and concepts from the classic Smith & Wollensky menu, and presents them with a warm weather twist,” said marketing director Kim Lapine. “Our goal is to give loyal guests something new to try and those unfamiliar with the Smith & Wollensky brand a reason to sample what we have to offer, preferably with a glass of wine in hand, enjoying the ambiance of one of our iconic locations.”

“Smith & Wollensky has a rich heritage of bringing people together with great food. This summer, we build on our reputation as a connector and join Old & New, Summer & Fun, and Food & Wine with the introduction of our Summer Grill Menu,” added Michael Feighery, president of Smith & Wollensky.

A sampling of the Boston Summer Grill Menu includes “Tried & True” favorites, starting with Pork Chop Milanese and new smaller cuts of Smith & Wollensky’s acclaimed meats; “Light & Healthy” offerings, such as Shrimp Cobb Salad and Asparagus & Crab Meat Salad; and “This & That” sides, such as Truffled Macaroni & Cheese, Sautéed Mushrooms, and Creamed Spinach. It wouldn’t be summer without “Lobster & More Lobster”—Lobster Bisque, Surf & Turf Maine Lobster & filet mignon, and Lobster Mashed Potatoes. “Sea & Be Seen” trying the Ahi Tuna Niçoise and Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass; or “Nibble & Nosh” on Colossal Lump Crab Meat Cocktail, Tomato & Mozzarella Salad, and Fried Calamari.

The Summer Grill Menu is offered for dinner daily at the Smith & Wollensky Boston steakhouse101 Arlington Street. The Boston location is open Monday through Sunday, 4:00 p.m.—10:00p.m.
